From export to equality & education

JazzDanmark is the national organisation for jazz in Denmark and Danish jazz abroad. JazzDanmark supports and promotes the growth and value of Danish jazz, both within Denmark and abroad through the creation and development of new collaborations, partnerships, projects and experiences and by encouraging participation and awareness.

The JazzDanmark team has worked nationally and internationally for over a decade with projects in a wide range of areas. The popular showcase programme in Germany called Danish Vibes, a Danish jazz festival in London called Sounds of Denmark, a cross-nordic talent program called Nordic Jazz Comets is just a few of the organisation’s famous international brands. In recent years the organisation has furthermore hosted several conceptual events and touring projects throughout Asia like Opposite Denmark Japan and DMC – Danish Music in China in order to respond to the demand for Danish jazz in the Asian region.

Since 2014 JazzDanmark have been determined to change the gender balance in jazz through several diversity projects. The countrywide JazzCamp for Girls-project is an acclaimed attempt to do this hosting 15-20 camps simultaneously across Denmark each year. An EU-funded touring project Kids Can working in collaboration with Jazzkaar (EE) and Hot Club (P) has proved new ways of working with diversity in music as well as audience development. Recently the diversity question within improvised music was challenged again with the project Improv for Refugee Children hosting camps across refugee centres in Denmark and developing educational material for diverse children groups without any use of spoken language.

JazzDanmark has been running the oldest international summer camp in Northern Europe for professional musicians for over 40 years called Summer Session, and have recently released a youth version of this named Jazzdalen (The Jazz Valley) with a declared 50/50 gender balance.

The Covid-19 crisis has prompted JazzDanmark to redirect projects into new formats, and released a widespread concert-concept called Backyard Jazz on March 20th 2020. Small concerts in backyards with audience watching from windows and balconies has entertained more than 250.000 audiences live and via stream across the world during the lock-down. In November JazzDanmark will host the Danish Music Awards Jazz, an annual event broadcasted live on TV and radio, showcasing the high quality of music in the country. We also hand out 130.000 € each year for travel support for Danish musicians touring abroad and administrate two other funding schemes for national transportation of musicians as well as project support.

In september 2020 JazzDanmark was awarded the Europe Jazz Award for Music & Community. Read more here.

About JazzDanmark

JazzDanmark is one of four so-called "genre-organizations" existing in Denmark. JazzDanmark - as the name suggests - works with jazz and related genres while the three other genre-organizations work with world, folk, and related genres (Tempi), rock, pop, and related genres (Rosa) and sound-art, new music, classical music and related genres (SNYK).

The genre-organizations are primarily funded by 4-year framework agreements with the Danish Arts Council, which is supplemented by funding from foundations, sponsors, and other sources. The current agreement runs from 2017-2021, thus following JazzDanmarks current strategic plan.

JazzDanmark is located in Copenhagen, but works on a nationwide scale in Denmark. Furthermore we have activities in a wide range of countries across the world. The organization's permanent team is made up of 5-7 full-time employees (see information here) and a couple of part-time employees, but the organization also engages numerous external collaborators and project managers.

JazzDanmark's work

JazzDanmark's work can be broken down into three tasks (defined by the Danish Arts Council for all the genre-organizations) and four strategic focuses (specific to JazzDanmark):

The three tasks are

  • Counseling, information and network activities
  • Project activities
  • Support activities (financial)
  • From 2021 and onwards the organisation will also work with data collection and analysis.

The four strategic focuses are

  • Audience development
  • Danish jazz in an international perspective
  • Diversity on, behind, and in front of the stage
  • Jazz in all of Denmark

JazzDanmarks services

JazzDanmark is the natural contact-point for international jazz-stakeholders who wish to collaborate with the Danish jazz-scene. For international musicians, this can be sharing of knowledge about the Danish livejazz-organizers or knowledge about agents and bookers who work with international acts. We can also help you with information on other Danish music organizations and potential collaborators who might have interest in your project or who can contribute to the realization of international operators' ambitions in Denmark.

Working with JazzDanmark

If you wish to learn more about JazzDanmark and our projects, feel free to contact us. If you are contacting us regarding collaboration on, or support for a project, please keep the following in mind:

  • JazzDanmark only hands out direct financial support to Danish musicians regarding support of international touring projects. More information on this pool is available here (in Danish).
  • If you are proposing a project or collaboration to JazzDanmark that might not involve any direct financial support, but still requires (financial) ressources from JazzDanmarks side, please consider how the project creates value for JazzDanmark and the Danish jazz scene. Simply offering to present some Danish jazz if we cover the costs isn't good enough - in that case we could have easily spent our yearly budget mid-january every year. Think about how the collaboration you're proposing supports the Danish artists visibility and long-term possibilities in your country/area and think about which ressources you are willing to put into the project. And then contact us. We're looking forward to hearing from you.

TRANSPORTATION SUBSIDY (Tilskud til international transport)

Introduction
The subsidy program aims to provide support for international transportation expenses from Denmark to abroad, from abroad to Denmark, and between states and regions abroad, particularly for longer distances. The subsidy program has changed its name from JazzDanmark Puljen to Support for International Transport.

Are you a musician, orchestra, booker, manager, festival director, or music journalist residing in Denmark? If so, you can read more about how to apply for subsidies for international transportation expenses.

The subsidy program is a travel support initiative for Danish entities to facilitate the execution of projects with an international character. Danish entities refer to those residing in Denmark and/or those considered to have a significant part of their activities in Denmark. However, it is a prerequisite for receiving subsidies that only individuals/institutions with MitID and NemKonto can apply.

JazzDanmark provides financial support within the jazz genre and related genres.

Upcoming Application Deadlines

  • Thursday, February 15, 2024, at 23:59
  • Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at 23:59
  • Thursday, August 15, 2024, at 23:59
  • Friday, November 15, 2024, at 23:59 For all application deadlines, it is essential to submit the application before 23:59.

Applications are processed by the rotating artistic committee, which, from 2023, consists of Luboš Soukup, Randi Pontoppidan, and Birgitte Soojin & Thomas Fonnesbæk.

What can be applied for, and who can apply?

  • Transportation from Denmark to abroad and from abroad to Denmark.
  • Transportation between states and regions abroad, particularly for longer distances. Subsidies for local transport are provided only for local transportation abroad.
  • Transportation in connection with activities that promote jazz in Denmark or Danish jazz abroad (concerts, collaborations, networking activities, journalistic assignments, management work, studio work, etc.). Who can apply: Creative and performing artists, music facilitators, agents, and others with a travel purpose that promotes jazz in Denmark or Danish jazz abroad. Note: It is a prerequisite for subsidies that only individuals/institutions with MitID and NemKonto can apply. JazzDanmark also accepts applications written in English.

If you wish to apply for support for a project spread over multiple periods, which is not a continuous tour, we encourage you to submit an application for each continuous time period. It is possible to submit more than one application for the same deadline.

What cannot be applied for, and who cannot apply?

  • Local transportation in Denmark, e.g., transportation to and from the airport.
  • Fees
  • Projects where implementation has started or concluded at the time of application submission.
  • Hotel stays
  • Per diems
  • Study stays abroad
  • Expenses for recording sessions
  • Marketing and PR
  • Participation fees for seminars, courses, and competitions
  • Operationally supported ensembles and dissemination institutions, etc., cannot apply.

The following criteria are the basis for the assessment of applications:

  • The application must be submitted before the start of the project/tour.
  • Development opportunities for either the applicant and/or Danish musical life
  • Artistic quality
  • Tour activities are prioritized higher than a single concert.
  • Emphasis is placed on a reasonable budget containing a realistic relationship between income and expenses. Fees in connection with tour activities abroad are expected not to be lower than local musicians' fees for similar concerts.
  • Maximum benefit from the allocated funds, e.g., organizing workshops or meetings with relevant partners for projects abroad or during visits by international soloists to Denmark.

Driving in your own car When driving in your own car, you can apply for subsidies for international transportation expenses using the state's low rate applicable to driving abroad. The rate includes fuel and other expenses for the car.

§ 16. Driving abroad: 2.23 DKK per km

Read more about the rate and transportation allowance for driving in a private car abroad here. The rates for 2024 are available here.

For driving in your own car, receipts for the purchase of fuel, expenses for bridges, etc., must be presented. For driving in a rented car, a receipt for the rental, rental period, and receipts for the purchase of fuel must be presented.

Double application and misplaced application Double application: An applicant cannot apply to several genre organizations for the same project. If your project/music belongs to multiple genres, you must choose one genre organization and apply there. The other 3 genre organizations are ROSA, Tempi, and Art Music Denmark. Note! Be aware that you cannot apply to more than one genre organization. If you apply to multiple genre organizations with the same project, all applications will be administratively rejected.

How to apply If this is your first time applying, you need to create a new user profile, as you cannot access the system without it. You create the user profile by choosing a username and password.

If you have already created a user profile and log in via NemID, you should continue to log in with the username and password // You have received an email regarding this from GrantOne (system owner).

If you have already created a user profile and log in via MitID, you should continue with that.

It is a prerequisite for subsidies that only individuals and institutions with Danish CPR or CVR number, as well as NemKonto, can apply.

An application must be submitted before the start of the project/tour. This means the project can already be underway before the deadline, as long as the application is submitted before the start of the project. You can expect a written response no later than 4 weeks after the deadline. Information about the outcome of an application is provided exclusively in writing – not by phone. Apply for Support for International Transport here.

If you have questions about the subsidy scheme or how to apply, you can always call Camilla Juul Kjærgaard at (+45) 3345 4300 or send an email to camilla@jazzdanmark.dk

If you get the grant
If your project is granted support, you will receive a letter of commitment. The subsidy is paid out after the completion of the project, and when a copy of transport receipts and reporting is submitted to JazzDanmark no later than 1 month after the project's completion. Note that the granted subsidy is adjusted in relation to the actual transport expenses within the granted amount. It is a prerequisite for the granted support to be deposited only into NemKonto. You will receive the grant within 6 weeks after approved reporting. The support is reported as B-income (not subject to AM duty/box 38) to SKAT at the same time as the payment.

Reporting
If you applied before Feb. 15, 2023, you must report via this reporting form: JazzDanmark's old reporting form. If you applied up to and after the deadline of May 15, 2023, you must report via your user profile on GrantOne with JazzDanmark's reporting form 2023. Reports are only accepted via the reporting forms – meaning you cannot send attachments and report via email or through the application system's mail function.

Rejection
If your project is not granted support, you will receive a rejection letter. If you receive an administrative rejection with the reason that your application belongs to another genre organization, JazzDanmark will enter into a dialogue with the applicant and advise on forwarding the original application for processing to the appropriate genre organization or to the State Art Fund's Project Support Committee for Music. Genre organizations' subsidy activities on behalf of the State Art Fund's Project Support Committee for Music are limited to providing subsidies for international transport that promotes the music scene in Denmark and Danish music abroad. Operationally supported orchestras, ensembles, and dissemination institutions, etc., cannot apply for international transport support.

Subsidy operations are uniformly administered through a common subsidy system, making it easier to understand genre organizations' priorities and achievements.
